Searchers Find Man Lost at Sea

After a day and a half of searching the ocean, San Diego and Los Angeles U.S. Coast Guard crews have found missing boater 39-year old Sean Haggerty.

Haggerty was sailing alone from San Francisco to San Diego but ended up off course, 40 miles southwest of San Diego. That's where a U.S. Coast Guard aircraft spotted the boat Sunday night, made contact and got word to the missing man's family.

Family and friends had reported Haggerty was last heard from April 1 near Point Conception when Haggerty reported that the engine and GPS system on his 26-foot sailing vessel was not working.

"He did the right thing. He filed a float plan, told his family where he was planning on being, when he was planning on being back," said U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson Henry Dunphy.

Haggerty's mother mother praised the coast guard's quick and vast response to find her son.

Coast Guard helicopters and a C-130 aircraft from Sacramento helped in the search.
