Inmates Riot at Detention Center

A fight involving about three dozen inmates at a jail in San Diego has sent three inmates to the hospital.

The fight between black and Latino inmates lasted about 10 minutes at the George Bailey Detention Facility on Thursday, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. The jail is in the 400 block of Alta Road in the Otay Mesa area.
     
Lt. Simon Hernandez said that guards used nonlethal weapons to break up the fight at a little before 1 p.m. and that none of the injuries were life-threatening. Hernandez said that the incident was over about five minutes after the use of the nonlethal weapons. No deputies were injured during the incident
     
Hernandez said deputies are investigating the cause of the skirmish, which happened in a common room.
