Inmate Swaps Bracelet, Escapes

Man walked out of the facility in Otay Mesa

San Diego County Sheriff's deputies are looking for an inmate who escaped from George Bailey Detention facility by wearing another inmate's identification wristband.

Tuan Tran, 50, walked out of the facility Wednesday.

“He conspired with another inmate who has the same last name, to switch wristbands that we put on them when they come into our custody," said spokesperson Phil Brust.

Lt. Brust says the inmate who gave Tran his identification wristband, is also a friend of Tran's who helped him commit other crimes in the past.

"The inmates look so much alike, and with the names that were similar they were able to succeed in getting this guy out the door," said Brust.

The inmate who helped Tran faces aiding and abetting charges.

Tran isn't considered a violent criminal. He has spent time in prison for crimes like check fraud and forgery.

Because of this escape, the deputies are looking at possible changes when it comes to how inmates are released.

“We always review our training and our policies so if something did slip through the cracks we'll find it and make sure it doesn't happen again," said Brust.
