Five 'good news' stories from the previous week

To help make sure you stay informed, each Sunday we'll revisit five stories from the previous week and capsulize them in this digest with the most recent updates.

Today's collection highlights some of the positive news events that happened this week.

1. Bob Wilson Turns 90

The city of Escondido gathered Sunday to celebrate Bob Wilson’s 90th birthday. If you live in Escondido you've probably heard the name. He's known for his compassion and generosity. He recently donated nearly $1 million dollars to victims of the Camp Fire. NBC 7's Brittany Ford shows us how the city turned out to celebrate him.

NBC 7’s Brittany Ford reports on the special day planned for the philanthropist known by so many in Escondido and across San Diego County.

2. 7 Marathons, 7 Continents, 7 Days, One Disease

Most would consider themselves lucky to visit seven continents in their lifetime. San Diegan Eric Tozer did it in seven days. On top of that -- each day of his trip across the globe, he completed a marathon. In this week's "Your Corner," NBC 7's Greg Bledsoe visits with the inspiring marathoner on his return from the trip of a lifetime and finds out the true reason Tozer wanted to push himself to his new limit.

In this Your Corner segment, NBC 7's Greg Bledsoe shares the story of Eric Tozer, a man living with Type 1 Diabetes who recently accomplished an incredible feat: running seven marathons, in seven continents, in seven days.

3. Community Helped Raise Enough Money for Boy's Surgery

A young boy in need of a fifth and potentially final surgery to reshape his head has secured the funding needs for the procedure, his parents said. Stephany and Marco asked for the community's help to raise $45,000 for their son Malakai, who has Mercedez Benz Syndrome. Telemundo 20's Guad Venegas spoke with the family and after their story appeared on both NBC 7 and T 20, and a community fundraising event last week, the family said funds started pouring in.

The 2-year-old's mother explained the complex procedure to Telemundo 20's Guad Venegas.

4. Closed Ocean Beach Pier Doesn't Stop Surprise Proposal

A little rain and some damage didn't stop Thomas Carey from proposing to girlfriend Chelsea Acker at their perfect spot. Despite a gate blocking access to the Ocean Beach Pier, where the pair went on their first date, Carey found a way to make it work. Carey crosshatched dozens of red and white flowers across the Ocean Beach Fishing Pier gate, brought Acker to the spot and got down on one knee. Take a look at the proposal here. Spoiler alert: she said yes!

5. Rain Makes 'Superbloom' a Strong Possibility in San Diego Deserts

The rainfall, followed by heat, is causing early blooms at Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. The increased rainwater is able to soak deeper into the soil where native wildflower seeds are, for a larger bloom. "In Anza Borrego, the desert area is starting to bloom now," said Michael Mayer, a professor in the biology department at the University of San Diego. "They're encouraging people to come out earlier." Experts said the best time to go this year to see the superbloom will be the last week of February or the first two weeks of March.
