What will people do for a free lunch? It was pretty obvious when you saw the line of people waiting for the free lunch promotion at House of Blues Friday.
The restaurant announced it was giving away a free lunch at its Fifth Avenue location and San Diegans turned out. The line of people -- easily hundreds, possibly thousands -- stretched a full block.
Those who brought a coupon received one of five entries for free between 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The dishes were southern-inspired including white truffle macaroni and cheese.
The downtown location decided to open its doors to announce the grand opening for lunch service. After many months of construction blocking the sidewalk in front of the restaurant, the business is now open at 11:30 a.m. weekdays for the downtown lunch crowd.
The kitchen stocked over 50 pounds of chicken in preparation of the event.
Bob Pearl knew he was standing all the way around the block from the front of the line but was told by the restaurant that they would feed everyone in line.
“I have a saying ‘If it’s free it’s for me, if I have to pay, no way’,” Pearl said. He works to get dozens of things for free throughout the year and thought nothing of waiting in line.
House of Blues has served free lunch many times before in many cities, according to a company spokesperson. The chain opened in 1992 in Cambridge, Mass. offering a free lunch on its very first day.
