Huge Sinkhole = Muddy Mess

A 16-inch cast iron water main break caused a huge sinkhole Saturday and made for a rough morning for some hotel guests.

The water main break was reported at 2:30 a.m. on the 4800 block of North Harbor Drive and temporarily cut off water supply to the nearby Holiday Inn.

A dance crew of poppers and lockers in town from Sacramento didn’t get to take a shower Saturday morning.

“Dirty, I don’t like being dirty. I like water and a shower, dancers need showers and water,” Zach said. “We’re all musty already, we like to be clean whenever we dance.”

Linda Howard was in town from Texas for her son’s graduation from the US Marine Corps and wasn’t going to let anything stand in the way of her son’s special day.

“Oh it’s fine, it’s no problem,” Howard said. “We’ve got swimming pools here! And a hot tub,” she said laughing.

The Texan praised the hotel for their quick response to the problem.

“They were really good at bringing all the water up the floors so that we could use what we needed,” Howard said.

Water department spokesman Arian Collins wasn’t quite as enthusiastic about the situation. He said the sinkhole was a huge mess and crews were expected to spend most of the day at scene.
