Most businesses and homeowners display the U.S. flag from sunrise to sunset. There are special rules regarding raising and lowering the flag.
However, if you have a flag pole outside of your home, and the flag will be up overnight, be sure to add lights on the flag after the sun sets.
This is according to the Flag Code developed by the American Legion.
Here are some other rules regarding the U.S. flag:
- The flag should not be displayed on days when the weather is inclement
- The flag should not be draped over the hood, top, sides, or back of a vehicle or of a railroad train or a boat
- No flag or pennant may be placed above the flag of the United States
- The flag should never be displayed with the union down
- The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise
- The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery
The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness.
