Memorial Day events and ceremonies around San Diego

Observed on the last Monday of May every year, Memorial Day commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in military service. This holiday was first enacted to honor Union soldiers of the Civil War, and has since expanded to remember American casualties of any military action.

Balboa Park: Memorial Services at the Vietnam Memorial at Balboa Park are offered Saturday – Monday. On Monday, there is a closing ceremony at 7:30am.

Coronado: The Coronado Navy League, Coronado Military Officers Association of America and VFW Post 2422 will host a 10 a.m. service at Coronado Star Park.

La Jolla: Located at the Mount Soledad Veterans Memorial, this presentation will honor the late Army General George Smith Patton Jr.

Point Loma: Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery hosts the Annual Memorial Day Service and Day of Remembrance ceremony at 10a.m.

National City: La Vista Memorial Park, 3191 Orange St, 11 a.m.

Solana Beach: VFW Post 5431 hosts an honorary ceremony at Veterans Memorial in La Colonia Community Park from 11am-noon.

Lakeside: A Memorial Day service will be held at the VFW, Carter-Smith Post 5867, 12650 Lindo Lane. 10 a.m. Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-El Cajon, and county Supervisor Dianne Jacob are expected to attend.

Escondido: American Legion 149, Oak Hill Memorial Park, 2640 Glenridge Road, 10 a.m.

Midway Museum: On the Midway, 910 N. Harbor Drive, San Diego, 10 a.m.

Fallbrook: A service at the Masonic Cemetery, 1177 Santa Margarita Drive, 11 a.m.
