Hit-and-Run Driver Sentenced to Work Furlough Program

A San Diego man will spend a year in custody for driving away after hitting a man on the side of the road in Ocean Beach.

The collision three months ago serious injured a man who had stopped to help a disabled car on Sunset Cliffs Boulevard.

Jaron Hillyer, 27, was sentenced Friday to 365 days in custody at a Residential Re-Entry center with three years formal probation.

Judge Eugenia Eyherabide sent Hillyer to a work furlough-residential re-entry program.

Julio Vasquez,26, suffered a broken hip, a broken leg and a punctured lung as a result of the April 9 collision.

One day after San Diego police released a description of the vehicle, Hillyer's car was located on Orchard Avenue in San Diego, less than two miles from the hit-and-run.

Police said Hillyer was driving with a suspended license and didn't have valid insurance.
