CHP: 2 Hurt in Interstate 8 Shooting in La Mesa

CHP officials say at least 12 bullets were fired from one vehicle to another

California Highway Patrol officers say someone fired at least a dozen gunshots at a car traveling along eastbound Interstate 8 early Monday, putting two El Cajon women in the hospital.

CHP officers say the shooting happened along eastbound Interstate 8 near 70th Street just before 1 a.m.

A Cadillac Escalade with bullet holes on the right side passenger doors and windows parked in the Albertsons shopping center at Fletcher Parkway and State Route 125 after the shooting.

Investigators say four people in the Escalade was traveling home from "The Game" concert in North Park when the shooting occurred.

La Mesa Police and Heartland Fire crews rushed to help the victims. Two women - ages 31 and 29 - were both sitting on the right side of a black SUV, police said. They were taken by ambulance to Sharp Memorial Hospital, officials said.

The woman sitting in the right rear of the vehicle has life-threatening injuries, and the woman in the right front, who was struck at least two times, has non-life threatening injuries.

Officers say the driver, 38-year-old El Cajon man Reese C. Beecher, was driving in the number four lane in the vicinity of 70th St. CHP officers say an unknown vehicle pulled up alongside in the number five lane and someone from inside that vehicle opened fire.

A 28-year-old El Cajon man sitting in the left rear seat was not injured, CHP officials said.

Beecher, who was also unhurt, was later arrested on suspicion of DUI, according to CHP Officer Kevin Pearlstein.

At this point, CHP has no description of the suspect or the suspect's vehicle.

"It's unclear if these people were targeted or if it was a random act or if it was a road rage incident at this time," said Pearlstein.

CHP closed I-8 at College Avenue to search for bullet casings and other evidence. The highway was reopened at about 3:30 a.m.

Officers say at least 12 bullets were fired in the shooting.
