High-Speed Chase Ends in Crash on 5 Freeway

Officers chased an SUV Monday from South Gate to the East Los Angeles area, where the vehicle crashed into a center divider and the injured motorist was arrested, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The chase ended about 7:20 a.m. on the northbound Santa Ana (5) Freeway near Cesar Chavez Avenue, said CHP Officer David Porter.

The man driving the SUV was injured, and paramedics transported him to a hospital, said CHP Officer Jennifer Connolly. His condition was not reported.

Authorities later said the man was suicidal and had been drinking, MSNBC reported.

South Gate police had tried to pull over the motorist at about 6:45 a.m., but he sped off, Connolly said. Police then asked the CHP to take over the chase.
