He's Made a Name for Himself

The baby elephant born at the former Wild Animal Park this spring finally has a name.

The calf, which was born on May 12, and his mom unveiled the name at San Diego Zoo Safari Park on Thursday. Officials said the elephant’s name is Emanti, which means "water" in Siswati, the language of Swaziland.

Park officials said that Emanti, appropriately, seems to be more fond of the water than other calves at his age.

Three finalist names were chosen from more than 1,000 suggestions submitted to the zoo's website. In all, more than 2,500 votes were cast earlier this month before the winning name was chosen.
