Jose Canseco pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor offense of trying to bring a fertility drug into the U.S. from Mexico. The former baseball slugger and admitted steroid user appeared in a federal courtroom Tuesday to face charges.
The former baseball star was held for hours at the San Ysidro border crossing October 9 after agents said they found fertility drugs in his car.
The human chorionic gonadotropin is illegal to possess without a prescription and is sometimes used to help restore production of testosterone lost by the use of steroids. Three years ago, Canseco admitted in his book that he had used steroids.
Canseco told the judge he had gone to Tijuana to find a substance to restore his testosterone levels in an attempt to reverse damage done by his admitted steroids use.
He was sentenced to 12 months unsupervised probation by U.S. Magistrate Judge Ruben B. Brooks.
Canseco played for the A's, Rangers and Red Sox, among other teams.
