The Martin Luther King, Jr. promenade is one of those lesser known downtown attractions that sort of ‘hides in plain sight.’
Hundreds of people walk along its ten-block pathway each month, many more cross it on their way back and forth between the San Diego Convention Center and the Gaslamp Quarter.
It runs just east of the trolley tracks between Market Street and 5th Avenue. Certainly many have taken notice, have you?
The national holiday commemorating the birth of the slain civil rights leader may be the perfect opportunity to make amends and take a stroll along this "path of inspiration."
There are a number of original sculptures relating to King's life and legacy, not to mention the excerpts from his many famous speeches.
Saturday could be a perfect time for a visit, before or after the big parade. A procession of marching bands, floats and drill teams will make its way through the streets of downtown San Diego during the annual Martin Luther King Jr. parade.
The parade, coordinated by the Zeta Sigma Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, will make its way from Petco Park's Tailgate Park at 10 a.m. and wind its way through downtown's East Village.
It will be followed by the 11th annual "San Diego Multicultural Festival," which begins at 11 a.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Promenade, across from the San Diego Convention Center.
The festival, organized by the Centre City Development Corp., features food, merchandise, educational booths, a "Global Village," children's area and two stages of musical entertainment.
More than 20,000 people are expected to attend the event, which celebrates San Diego's diverse culture and heritage.
