The new General Dynamics NASSCO tanker, Garden State, was christened in San Diego on May 7.

General Dynamics NASSCO christened the tanker Garden State on May 7 in an event that featured the 610-foot-long vessel sliding down the shipyard’s inclined ways, into San Diego Bay.

The 330,000-barrel capacity Garden State is the third of five tankers that the Barrio Logan shipyard is building for American Petroleum Tankers, a subsidiary of Kinder Morgan Inc. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Shares of General Dynamics trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol GD.

The Garden State is built to the ECO design, which is more fuel-efficient than comparable ships. American Petroleum Tankers has the option of converting its main engine to liquefied natural gas propulsion.

San Diego County Supervisor Greg Cox was keynote speaker at the Saturday evening event, timed to coincide with the high tide. Cox took part in a previous ceremony where shipyard officials laid the Garden State’s keel.
