Crews Repairing Gas Leak in Mid-City

San Diego Fire-Rescue crews responded to reports of a gas leak caused by a construction crew in Mid-City Monday afternoon.

Crews arrived at 3865 Chamoune Avenue around 1 p.m. and found a natural gas leak down an alley, SDFD Battalion Chief Grace Yamane said.

"Right now we think it's a 1-inch line, but we're not quite sure. We do have an SDG&E rep here, but we still have the control crew responding," Yamane said.

"We do have a little bit of gas still seeping out in the area and we did some precautionary evacuations," she added.

Two multi-family dwellings, seven people and two dogs in total, were evacuated, according to Yamane.

The construction crew was able to use some wire to crimp off that line, but it was not completely shut off, she said.

SDG&E crews will double check and secure the area.

San Diego Police also responded to the area.

"Please call DigAlert, before you start a job," Yamane added.
