Ongoing construction of a mass transit overpass has led to a full closure of Nobel Drive just west of Interstate 5 in La Jolla, in effect through early Sunday.
San Diego Association of Government officials said road closures in the busy area include Nobel Drive at the I-5 intersection, from the freeway on-ramp to the entrances of the Shops at La Jolla Village and La Jolla Village Square. The closure is in effect now through 12:01 a.m. Sunday. The I-5 off-ramp will remain open, as well as access to the businesses and shops.
SANDAG said the areas would also be off-limits to bicyclists and pedestrians. Detour signs were posted all over the impacted areas.
The construction is part of the Mid-Coast Trolley Project, which will extend Blue Line Trolley service from Old Town north to the University City community, serving Mission Bay Park, the VA Medical Center, UC San Diego, and University Town Center. Nine new trolley stations will be built.
Work on the project began in October 2016. Trolley service in that area is expected to begin in late 2021.
SANDAG officials said the expansion of mass transit into this area of the county is necessary because estimates suggest the population will grow by 19 percent in the corridor by 2030.

This comes in the middle of further I-5 construction to extend carpool lanes.
About two weeks ago, construction for this project prompted the overnight closure of southbound I-5 lanes from The Merge to La Jolla Village Drive. For that portion of the project, crews worked to pour concrete as part of the construction of the trolley overpass that will cross I-5 at Voigt Drive.
