Fugitive Mom Makes Bid For Release

A California woman back in a Michigan prison after escaping in 1976 has been privately interviewed by a parole-board member in her bid to be released.

Susan LeFevre appeared over a video-conferencing system Thursday from a prison in Ypsilanti. Corrections Department spokesman John Cordell did not immediately identify the board member who spoke to her.

The 54-year-old LeFevre was in prison for a heroin sale when she escaped after about 14 months. She was captured in 2008 living as a suburban mom under a different name in the San Diego area.

A three-member panel will decide whether LeFevre should be released. She says her 10-year sentence in Saginaw County Circuit Court was excessive for a first-time offender.
