Front Row Seat to Worst Show on Earth

For residents who live along the southern edge of Lake Hodges, it has been a difficult five days. Their homes are only a few hundred yards away from the site where a body was found in the search for missing teenager Chelsea King. They can see the area from their backyards.

For those living along Alborada Drive, the beautiful view of Lake Hodges could be considered a huge advantage but ever since last Thursday, the view has been anything but beautiful.

β€œIt's just heartbreaking to know that we were here we could have heard her scream or something and didn't," said resident Karen Sixt.

Homeowner Jean Lewis said the view from her home will never be the same. "You know we've had front row seats to the worst show on Earth," Lewis said.

β€œI thought I would feel better when she was found but I don’t,” she said.

Tuesday afternoon San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore announced that searchers had found a body in a shallow grave near a tributary about 15 feet from the southern shore of Lake Hodges.

Officials cordoned off a large area with police tape and made a series of trips to the shore from a boat moored nearby. The body was found about 10 feet from the water's edge.

"She's been there this whole time and I feel so hopeless and helpless and I feel for the family my heart goes out to them," Heather Ryberg said.

Gore said he had informed the teen's parents, Brent and Kelly King. "Obviously they are devastated," he said.

A nearby resident, Russ, has two children and got emotional when talking about how he was going to tell them about the discovery near their home.

β€œYou just got to hold them and hug them and tell them you love them," Machado said. "You never know when something like this will happen it's crazy."
