Foster Mom Denies Stealing Donated Toys

A San Diego foster mother accused of selling thousands of toys donated for needy children says she was saving some of the best to give away during lean times.

At a preliminary hearing yesterday in San Diego Superior Court, prosecutors played a recording of an interview with Virginia Kelly.

Kelly, a 73-year-old who won awards for her volunteer work with Toys for Tots, was charged with grand theft and embezzlement in April after authorities seized about 11,000 toys.

Prosecutors say she gave away only half the toys she collected and sold the rest.

An investigator told the court Kelly refused to let him search her home before she was arrested. Kelly says in the recording that she was afraid and wanted to save the toys for when donations dipped.
