Forcing San Diegans to Slash Water Use

Mayor Jerry Sanders has unveiled a plan that would force residential customers to cut their outdoor water use by 45 percent and their indoor water use by 5 percent starting July 1.

Commercial customers will have to cut water use outside by 45 percent and 3 percent inside, which the mayor said acknowledges the difficulty of trimming inside water use for many companies and the economic importance of businesses.

The new rules would cut the city's water demand by about 20 percent. Customers would have to save more water if the drought gets worse.
