Several Blocks Flooded in Grant Hill

A fire line break has filled several blocks of Commercial Street with water

A pipe break flooded several blocks of Commercial Street in Grant Hill early Monday.

Water first started bubbling up after 4 a.m. when a fire line burst, officials said. The line provides water for fire sprinklers to the building that houses the San Diego Opera Scenic Studio. Initially, city water officials said the break was a water main.

Soon, the standing water reached several blocks away and momentarily delayed trolley service.

J.R. Johnson opened up the gates of his workplace around 4:45 a.m. and found the flooding.

“I think it’s going to be alright,” he said adding that it’s not flooded in the area before.

He said he called his co-workers and warned them about the street closure. The business suffered no damage.

“I’m a little concerned about all this water running. We just got through getting all of this rain and now we’re losing it all,” Johnson said.

No customers were without water. However, water pressure could be low for residents in the area.

Commercial Street between 29th and and 31st Streets was closed to cars.

Trolley service was temporarily stopped but appeared to be running and able to navigate through the flooding without incident.
