Painter Rushes to Help Woman with Disabilities Escape Burning Home

A painter next door rushed to rescue of a woman with disabilities, rescuing her from her burning home.

The fire broke out around 3:35 p.m. on the 6900 block of Quiet Cove Drive, said North Comm and Carlsbad Fire Department officials.

Painter Marcial Mayen was working just across the street When he spotted smoke and flames pouring from the woman's house.

Mayen says he and a neighbor found the 30-year-old homeowner at her front door. While she was not yelling for help, it appears she had attempted to get out on her own.

"She can't walk, she can't do anything, she was, you know, laid down by the front door," Mayen said.

Together, the two of them helped the woman get out of her home on time.

By the time firefighters arrived, the smoke had grown thick and had begun rafting up above the home.

The victim is at the scene being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Firefighters say the house is a total loss.
