A vegetation fire burned less than an acre and produced a large amount of smoke near Mount Soledad Friday.
San Diego Fire-Rescue crews were called to the neighborhood north of Mission Bay at 11:40 a.m.
Video from the NBC 7 helicopter showed flames burning in the bottom of the canyon, near power poles.
Firefighters were on the ground battling the fire. A firefighter helicopter made one water drop, according to the SDFD spokesperson. SDFD later said the fire was started accidentally in a nearby homeless encampment.
One homeowner who identified himself as Ray said the area is called the Van Nuys Canyon. He's lived there since 1998 and said he has been concerned with fires and landslides.
"I do have a plan. I have several garden hoses all hooked up and ready to go," he said. "I would fight to save the house."
The canyon is located west of Kate Sessions Park and north of Turquoise Street.
No injuries or property damage were reported, according to the SDFD spokesperson.
