Fire Drives Out Family Preparing for Housewarming

A family was preparing for a housewarming party when a fire ripped through their home.

Heavy smoke and flames started pouring from the single-family house in the 3500 block of Altadena Avenue in City Heights home Friday afternoon, San Diego fire officials say.

A mother and her three adult children -- a son and two daughters -- had moved into the area a month and a half ago.

They were cooking in the kitchen and preparing for their housewarming party when the fire started, they told fire officials. The family and their small dog got out safely.

By the time fire crews arrived, fire had extensively damaged the kitchen and living room. The flames were extiguished about 25 minutes later.

Fire investigators say the cause of the fire was aerosol cans stored in the broiler section of the oven.

Officials estimate the damage is about $100,000 to the house and $20,000 to the contents inside.
