A brush fire burning near a highway interchange south of San Diego produced large amounts of smoke Monday morning.
The fire started around 10:30 a.m. in a canyon along northbound Interstate 805 just south of State Route 54, near Plaza Bonita.
The fire caused a traffic backup in Chula Vista.
According to the Chula Vista Fire Department, the blaze started in a homeless encampment. The battalion chief said these types of vegetation fires are common, especially when temperatures get colder.
