Details emerge Friday after the shooting death of a Border Patrol agent who was killed near the Mexican border.
Robert Rosas was shot Thursday at about 9 p.m. in Campo near the U.S.-Mexican border while "responding to a possible incursion into the U.S.," according to investigators. What that incursion was exactly -- whether it was immigrant or drug smuggling -- is unknown at this time. Investigators do know that Rojas, 30, was shot multiple times while he was outside his vehicle.
On Friday, officials said they believe a suspect was also wounded in the incident. The FBI is asking to be contacted if any hospital, clinic or doctor on either side of the border is suspicious about someone who sought treatment.
"It could be a gunshot wound," FBI Special Agent in Charge Keith Slotter said. "We do believe it was a wound significant enough to cause bleeding, which leads us to believe it's a wound that would have required treatment, which is why we're asking for that sort of assistance."
Slotter said Rosas was dead by the time other agents responded.
In other major developments on Friday, federal officials announced that they were offering a $100,000 reward for the killer's arrest and conviction.
Flags are flying at half-staff at U.S. Border Patrol headquarters in Chula Vista. Officials there are vowing -- along with other law enforcement agencies on both sides of the border -- to make sure these Rosas' killer or killers are brought to justice.
