Missing Man with Schizophrenia Found Safe: Family

Several people said they saw Jesus Sahagun Monday in the Mission Valley area and said he was trying to catch a ride to Downtown.

The family of a man with schizophrenia who was missing since the weekend says he has been found safe.

Vivian Sahagun filed a missing person report with the Chula Vista Police Department on Sunday after her son, 33-year-old Jesus Sahagun, went missing Saturday.

Several people said they had seen Jesus along Hotel Circle Drive in Mission Valley on Monday and Tuesday, so that’s where Vivian and her daughter Silvia focused their energy Tuesday afternoon.

“I got off at this time [Monday] and when I was leaving he asked me for $5 and he was over here by the gas station,” Alfredo Pineda said. He’s at least the third person who’s said they’ve seen Jesus in the Mission Valley area.

Other said they recognized Jesus as the man they saw in the Hilton Hotel lobby and at a nearby Wendy’s.

Pineda said he recognized Jesus when his family showed him the photo because he was wearing the same red shirt.

According to his family, Jesus was diagnosed with schizophrenia at age 16 and doesn’t have his medication with him.

“We are just desperate to find him because we know he might be sleeping on the streets,” Silvia said. “I don't know where he has been eating or if people have been treating him bad, because obviously people think he is homeless or that he is drugged. Like the guy who saw him yesterday.”

Before Jesus’ diagnosis, Silvia says he lived a normal life.

“He was the popular guy in school,” she said. “He knew a lot of people, he was very friendly, he was smart.”

Now this is the family's new normal. They Don’t know what direction his illness will take him next and fear it will put him in harm’s way.

According to many of the reports from the people who interacted with Jesus in Mission Valley, he was trying to hitch a ride to Downtown and Vivian and Silvia spent Tuesday night searching there.

Jesus' aunt told Telemundo 20 he was found in the College Area after someone contacted the family on Facebook.
