Extreme Winds Fanned Palm Springs Fire, Knocked Out Power

The cause of a 40-acre wildfire that was fanned by near-hurricane-force winds in north Palm Springs was under investigation, firefighters said.

Friday's blaze singed at least three Palm Springs homes and prompted a mandatory evacuation affecting scores of residents, and at least one person was treated for smoke inhalation, fire officials said.

More than 1,400 homes and businesses remained without power Saturday, following one of the worst windstorms in recent Palm Springs history, a Southern California Edison spokeswoman said.

Preliminary damage estimates indicate that Friday's windstorm, which had gusts approaching 70 mph, did far more destruction across Palm Springs than a brush fire that scorched 40 acres on the city's northern edge, below Chino Canyon.
