Explosion Rocks Escondido Neighborhood

A large explosion destroyed several cars and damaged some homes in Escondido early Wednesday.

The Escondido fire department arrived to the 600 block of North Fig Street just after 2:30 a.m. and found two homes and several cars and trees on fire.

Two homes were evacuated and five cars were damaged in the incident. Both homes had minor damage to the exterior including melting of light fixture and scorching of siding.

There are no reports of any injuries.

"It was either the trees first that caught the car or something in the yard which caught the trees," said Escondido Battalion Chief Randy Brooks.  "We believe the explosions that people thought they heard were probably just the tires."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
