Expected Local Holiday Spending Pegged at $5.3 Billion

San Diego retailers and restaurateurs can expect a sizeable holiday season, with a projected $5.3 billion to be spent here in December, according to an estimate from the San Diego Association of Governments, a regional planning agency.

That’s a modest 4 percent increase from last year’s $5.1 billion in retail and food service spending and about 20 percent more than what’s spent in other months of the year.

SANDAG Chief Economist Ray Major said about 30,000 seasonal jobs will be created during the holiday season in San Diego County, essentially flat from last year. An estimated 1.15 million additional visitors will visit the region this month, up slightly from the 1.11 million visitors last year.
