Ex-Husband Arrested in Woman's Stabbing

Jose Ascencio Gomez, 56, is accused of stabbing his ex-wife

An Imperial Beach man accused of stabbing his ex-wife five times in the chest has been arrested, according to sheriff's officials.

The stabbing happened around 3:45 p.m. Saturday at a home in the 600-block of 11 St. in Imperial Beach.

According to officials, Jose Ascencio Gomez, 57, went to his ex-wife’s home saying he needed to use the phone. Officials said they got into an argument; Gomez grabbed a knife from the kitchen and stabbed the woman five times in the chest.

Officials said her wounds did not appear life-threatening.

Around 11:30 a.m. Monday, authorities say they received a call from someone who spotted a suspicious person matching Gomez's description. Deputies set up a perimeter in the 800-block of Palm Ave. and took Gomez into custody.

Gomez had $3,000 in cash on him when he was arrested, according to officials.

He was booked into San Diego Central Jail for attempted murder.

Gomez was described as 5-foot-7 and 150 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. Relatives had told authorities that he could be in Mexico.
