Escondido Parking Ordinance Allows You To Park It In Your Yard

The Escondido City Council agreed on an ordinance to loosen restrictions against parking in the front yards of single-family homes, according to our media partner, North County Times.

The ordinance, which could be approved as early as next month, would allow Escondido residents to pave one additional parking spot next to the driveway in front of their garage. The new ordinance, however, would not end a prohibition against parking on the grass or gravel areas of front yards, which has some people upset.

Last September, the council considered this new "side-yard parking ordinance", along with a proposal to require permits for overnight parking on residential streets. These two laws were combined in an effort help residents deal with the parking woes that the overnight restrictions would create.

When the council pushed aside the overnight restrictions last fall, it appeared that  the side-yard parking law would also be abandoned. But Councilwoman Olga Diaz has revisited the issue.

"I don't see any objection to having a widened driveway," said Diaz. "I don't want people to wake up Sunday morning with a ticket on their car for parking in their own yard."

Since the yard-parking law was put into effect January 2008, about one in nine tickets issues have involved side-yard parking, said planning chief Jon Brindle.

But out of more than 100 side-parking tickets given, the city has only received three e-mails complaining about the restrictions, Brindle said.
