Police say a man entered an Escondido home and sexually assaulted a woman

Escondido police are asking for your help in finding a suspect in a sexual assault.

Police say around 1 a.m. Monday a woman in the 600 block of South Juniper Street awoke to a strange noise inside her home. When she went to see what it was police say she came face to face with an intruder.  The man sexually assaulted the woman.

Investigators say neighbors reported hearing what sounded like someone rummaging through the trash cans around the time of the assault.

Police say the suspect got into the woman's home through an unlocked door. The victim has not been identified at this time. She believes the suspect is about 6-feet tall, with a medium build, and possibly in his late twenties. He was wearing a white shirt and sweat pants.

Lt. Chris Wynn with the Escondido Police Department says investigators are reviewing the records of sex offenders in the area.  They are also checking with other agencies to see if there were any similar assaults.

Lt. Wynn is encouraging residents to practice good crime prevention techniques. He says residents should make sure all windows and doors are locked before going to bed for the evening or leaving their home.  He is also reminding people to be aware of their surroundings.
