A car went off the road and struck a utility box in the 3400 block of Mary Lane in Escondido, temporarily closing the road in both directions, California Highway Patrol (CHP) confirmed.

There were no other vehicles involved in the crash, which happened just after 1 p.m. Monday.

Escondido police assisted CHP with the road closure while crews worked to remove the car and deenergize the affected wires.

The driver said as he was going around a curve in the road when a cooler from his front seat fell down near the gas and brake pedals, causing him to crash.

    Luckily, he wasn't injured.

Officials said 50 people in the area will be without power until 10 or 11 p.m. Monday.
