The San Diego City Council has unanimously approved an Equal Benefits ordinance for same-sex couples.
The ordinance proposed by Councilman Todd Gloria will insure that city contractors provide same-sex couples the same benefits provided to heterosexual couples.
“Equality is a priority for the City of San Diego,” said Councilman Gloria in a statement. “We have made it clear that companies should provide fair benefits to their employees.”
The new ordinance will bring city contractors in line with non-discrimination laws, which prohibits city contractors from discriminating against employees based on sexual orientation and marital status.
The measure will take effect in January. Several cities throughout California have a similar ordinance in place.
