Encinitas I-5 On Ramp Closed After Woman Hit by Car

A 55-year-old woman suffered serious injuries after she was hit by a car while walking across an on-ramp in Encinitas, San Diego Sheriff's officials said.

The incident happened at approximately 8:10 p.m. when deputies were called to the scene of a car versus pedestrian crash on the southbound Interstate 5 on ramp at Encinitas Boulevard.

The victim, who has not been identified by officials, was lying unconscious in the road when officials arrived. California Highway Patrol officials said the crash was not a hit-and-run incident. The driver told officials he did not see the woman, even though she was in the middle of the crosswalk.

Witnesses on scene said the woman was hit by a 2006 Toyota Tundra truck as she walked. Sheriff's officials said it appeared the woman crossed the road against the solid red light.

The driver of the truck did not see the woman as he made a left turn on the freeway when he had a green arrow, investigators said.

The victim suffered a possible fractured femur and head trauma. She was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
