Encinitas Gang Members Linked to Carlsbad Shootings

Law enforcement officials are stepping up their patrol in gang areas after they discovered that gang members from Encinitas were involved in two Carlsbad shootings, according to our media partner, the North County Times.

While neither shooting victim was a Carlsbad gang member, each shooting took place in traditional Carlsbad gang turf.

Carlsbad and Encinitas each have one multigenerational Latino street gang, according to the North County Times. Carlsbad's gang has about 100 documented members and Encinitas has about 30.

Both areas have some of the lowest crime rates in the North County and neither is widely associated with gang violence.

The two gangs have been both rivals and allies. Detectives are unsure why Encinitas gang members have stepped up the violence in Carlsbad this year, reported the North County Times.

"They've had a rivalry in the past but I haven't seen a flare-up like this," Carlsbad police Lt. Kelly Cain said.

Three Encinitas gang members are in jail, suspected of a role in the shooting, said Cain.
