San Diego police found the victim in a fatal stabbing outside an Encanto home with a knife still in his chest.
The victim was found at 12:45 p.m. in the backyard of the home on Brooklyn Avenue, police said.
Officers were called to the report of a stabbing and found an adult man.
Emergency personnel were called and attempted CPR but the man was pronounced dead approximately 15 minutes after he was found.
The man was playing with the knife before he was found stabbed, police said.
His family was outside the home visibly distraught.
Officers say the death appears to be a freak accident and nothing criminal.
