A 9-year-old boy was safe and back with his mother in El Cajon Sunday, after his father, armed with a handgun, allegedly abducted the boy.
Around 11 p.m. Saturday, Anthony Cortez, 28, came to the home of an adult couple who was baby sitting his son on E. Lexington Avenue and tried to remove the child from the residence, according to El Cajon Police.
Cortez does not have custody of his son.
When one of the babysitters tried to stop him from taking the child, the suspect pulled out a handgun and shot twice before fleeing the scene.
Nobody was hurt by the gunfire, police said.
Shortly after police began searching for the suspect, but came up unsuccessful Saturday evening.
Cortez finally returned his son to the boy’s mother on Sunday morning. Police were able to bring him into custody without further incident.

Cortez is currently being jailed under suspicion of kidnapping.
