Robber Who Fired Gun Inside Bank Arrested

Richard Bareano, 35, is accused of robbing a bank in El Cajon on Jul. 9 while armed with a handgun

An armed man who fired a shot inside an El Cajon bank during a recent robbery has now been arrested, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

According to police, Lemon Grove resident Richard Bareano, 35, allegedly robbed a California Coast Credit Union located at 898 Jackman St. in El Cajon on Jul. 9.

Armed with a handgun, police say Bareano walked into the bank at around 5 p.m. and fired a single shot. He then jumped on a teller counter and stole an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the scene.

No one was injured.

Police released bank surveillance photos of the robbery suspect to the public in an effort to identify him. The El Cajon Police Department received multiple tips identifying the bandit as Bareano.

A week later, police arrested Bareano in Chula Vista.

Authorities say that when Bareano was taken into custody, he was in possession of a loaded firearm, narcotics and clothing similar to the clothing the suspect wore in the bank robbery.

Bareano has been charged with armed robbery, felony possession of a firearm and possession of a controlled substance.
