Small Quake Rattles Region

Quake hits Palomar Mountain

Did you feel it? A magnitude 3.5 earthquake shook North County at 9:38 a.m., Tuesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake was centered just 9 miles northeast of the Palomar Observatory, 28 miles northeast of Escondido and 49 miles north northeast of San Diego. USGS spokesperson Deborah Williams-Hedges said the quake hit 11 miles north-northeast of the Elsinore Fault.

The quake was not on the Imperial Fault, which was responsible for the 7.2 earthquake that hit Imperial valley on Easter Sunday, noted Williams-Hedges.
