Driver Falls Asleep Behind Wheel, Dies in Crash

The victim was a 23-year-old man from Carlsbad, CHP confirmed

A driver who presumably fell asleep at the wheel died in a crash on Interstate 5 in Encinitas, according to authorities.

CHP officials confirmed a 23-year-old Carlsbad resident driving a 1996 Honda Accord veered off the highway near Birmingham Drive around 11:15 p.m. Saturday and struck a tree off the shoulder.

The driver died at the scene.

Investigators said the driver was spotted swerving. They believe he may have fallen asleep behind the steering wheel.

No other vehicles were involved in the fatal crash.

The name of the driver has not been released.
