Driver Escapes Deputy After High-Speed Chase

The deputy involved in the pursuit said speeds got up to 80 miles an hour during the chase

The driver in an early-morning police chase escaped capture when the pursuit ended in Chollas View early Tuesday.

A man driving a white Toyota Camry was traveling southbound on Sweetwater Road when a San Diego County Sheriff’s Deputy saw the car parked in a bike lane.

The deputy said when a man got out of the car and walked away from it, he pulled his patrol car behind the car.

That’s when the driver ran back and jumped into the driver’s seat and took off heading south.

A 10-mile pursuit followed with the driver traveling north on Interstate 805.

At the I-805, State Route 94 interchange, the Camry crashed into some bushes along the road.

The driver ran on foot. The woman who was riding in the passenger seat was taken into custody.

Deputies identified her as 19-year-old Roxana Covarrubias. She was booked on possession of a stolen vehicle and conspiracy.

Officials say the car was an unreported stolen vehicle from San Diego.

CHP officers were investigating the crash. The deputy involved in the pursuit said speeds got up to 80 miles an hour during the chase.
