Don't Get the Pigs Sick!

At this point in time, humans are the only species that the swine flu has been detected in, according to a local vet.

The only reason the illness was first referred to as "swine flu" is because the genetic make-up of the virus closely resembles viruses found in pigs, San Diego County Chief Veterinarian Dr. Nikos Gurfield said.

Health officials are asking people with flu-like symptoms to stay away from pigs, since they may be the animals most susceptible to the virus.

So far, San Diego County authorities are reporting a total of eight swine flu cases. All are fully recovered.

The county Health and Human Services Agency says the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed three new San Diego cases Wednesday -- a 38-year-old man, a 23-year-old man and a 3-year-old boy.

The county says seven probable cases include a 3-year-old girl who recovered after an overnight stay Sunday at Rady Children's Hospital. Her father and 7-year-old brother are among the eight cases that the county confirmed.
