Dolphin With Broken Jaw Rescued by SeaWorld Dies

Rosey, a long-beaked common male dolphin, was found stranded in Oceanside on June 16, suffering from a broken jaw

A dolphin with a broken jaw found stranded in Oceanside last week and rescued by SeaWorld San Diego has died, a park official confirmed Friday.

SeaWorld spokesperson David Koontz told NBC 7 the long-beak common male dolphin, who was between three and four years old, passed away Wednesday. His name was Rosey.

According to Koontz, Rosey was rescued by a team from SeaWorld on June 16 in Oceanside after he was found beached in Oceanside, suffering from a fracture to his upper jaw.

“Although he showed some initial signs of improvement over the weekend and earlier in this week, his health status started to decline Wednesday,” Koontz explained. Our animal care specialists and veterinarians did everything they could for him.”

Koontz said the team at SeaWorld is “heartbroken” by the dolphin’s death.

“It was a very sad day for us as our hope was to be able to give Rosey a second chance at life,” Koontz added.

A necropsy is underway to determine Rosey’s cause of death.
