A defense contractor who pleaded guilty to bribing former U.S. Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham has asked a judge that he be sentenced to a year of home detention.
Mitchell Wade, who in 2006 admitted giving Cunningham more than $1 million in kickbacks, a yacht dubbed "The Duke-stir" and other gifts in exchange for about $150 million in government contracts, asked in sentencing memoranda filed Wednesday that he be given leniency for cooperating in the prosecution of Cunningham and others.
"I feel ashamed that I have disgraced myself, my family and many of my former colleagues," Wade wrote in a letter do U.S. District Judge Ricardo Urbina. "I ask your Honor to consider that I am a man changed by this experience."
Prosecutors concede that Wade has been helpful in cases against Cunningham, ex-CIA official Kyle "Dusty" Foggo and Wade's former boss Brent Wilkes, but asked that Urbina give Wade four years in prison given the breadth of his bribery.
Wade is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 15.
