Disabled Vets Attend Sports Clinic At La Jolla Shores

A group of disabled veterans spent the day at the ocean, where they went surfing, sailing and kayaking.

They said it will change their life forever, NBC 7/39 reported.

It took a lot of practice, but Chris Finnigan stuck with it, setting an example for other disabled vets who spent the day at La Jolla Shores overcoming their disabilities with help from teachers who volunteered their time.

The veterans participated in the first-ever Veteran's Summer Sports Clinic Wednesday, October 1.

The clinic offers six days of surfing, sailing, cycling and other sports at locations around the county.

It was the first time in the surf for Navy veteran Daniel Underwood. "My instructor told me what to do, and how to do it, and pushed me off -- and next thing I know, I say, 'Hey, hey, alright!'" Underwood said.

Some of the veterans have brain injuries, and several are blind. Many of them are recently injured, and this was their first exposure to recreational sports, NBC 7/39 reported.
