Detectives Sort Out South Bay Shooting

Victim indentified as Leonel Lonnie Flores III

A late night shooting in the South Bay left one man dead and detectives trying to put together the pieces.

Detectives were scouring the 2600 block of Grove Street in Lincoln Acres taking pictures and gathering evidence after a 37-year-old Leonel Lonnie Flores III was shot and killed at 1:00 early Sunday morning. The shooting was being investigated as a possible homicide.

"Something transpired and we're still trying to hash that out," Lt. Dennis Brugos with the San Diego Sheriffs Department said, "At some point the homeowner, or the person who lives here, not sure if he’s a renter or what, he shot the decedent."

The victim's friend escaped by jumping out the front window of a home, shattering the glass. Detectives were still looking for that man on Sunday. The person who lives inside that home and fired the gun has been identified as 61-year-old John Ratliff.

β€œHe's being interviewed,” Lt. Brugos said, β€œWe're not sure what this is, whether this is a home invasion robbery or what.”
