Deadly Wreck Closes Major Highway

A busy highway was shut down after a deadly accident Tuesday. One person was killed and another injured in the crash in Otay Mesa at the intersection of Cactus Road and SR 905.

According to CHP officers, Ramiro Rodriguez, 49, of San Ysidro was driving east on Otay Mesa Road when his white Jetta crossed the raised island dividing the road. The car slid sideways into the westbound lanes and was hit by an Oldsmobile Alero.

"There were Border Patrol agents driving a few seconds behind the collision, on their way to work, and saw part of the collision when it occurred," said San Diego Police Sgt. Mike McCollough.

Rodriguez was not wearing a seatbelt and died instantly in the crash.  According to the medical examiner, Rodriguez lived in San Ysidro with his family and worked as a truck driver. The driver of the Oldsmobile was sent to the hospital.

CHP officers rerouted traffic until the section of the road reopened at 7:30 a.m.
